Fireworks

Relics 2004

This series of prints and drawings are about memories and loss and are an attempt to present differences between the depicted representation of an event and the remains of the actual experience of it.

The image of the firework became, during this series of work, an interesting metaphor for the ephemeral nature of our experiences. They are a potent symbol – dressed up with a sole purpose to entertain yet destined to self-destruct. By carrying out its ‘raison d’etre’ it is destroyed; and we are left with only the remains.

This series also acknowledges the nature of change; the indisputable fact that everything exists through the continuum and that everything changes beyond our control. These prints were subjected to their own reality and subject matter and as a result they have been physically and randomly changed.
